Turn that smile upside down, McDonald’s!
So apparently McDonald’s Happy Meals in Santa Clara County (where we live) will be banned in 3 months. I have never been a fan of McDonald’s food (I think I have eaten there fewer than 5 times in my life), but I admit that I do occasionally enjoy fast food. What I do not enjoy, however, is fast food for my children. I fully understand how cheap, convenient and easy it is to just pick up some fast food for kids. Many times I have sat there trying to get that last bite of Broccoli into Reese’s unwilling maw and wished for easier meal times. But this is the one time in my life when I have almost total control over their diet and I plan to make the most of it.
It has kind of become an accepted evil in our society. Every parent knows it’s wrong to feed their kids fast food too often, if at all. Even ignoring physical effects, there are significant social problems as well. There’s no denying that obese kids, no matter the reason for their obesity, have on average a tougher social life and that it can affect them for the rest of their lives. I just hope Meghan and I can be strong (stronger than we are with our own diets at least) and give our kids a good, healthy start to a healthy life.

The root of the problem though, as Aubree pointed out in the comments, is that a salad costs more than a hamburger. Why? Our government massively subsidizes multiple levels of meat production, but mostly ignores the healthier alternatives. So why do they do it? Because the meat and dairy industry pay off politicians. Lobbying for economic profit and an unhealthy America! Hooray!

So in case you have any more multimillionare business pros, here is an idea for them.
A Healthy Fast Food Chain.
I know McDonalds is the root of all evil yadda yadda yadda, but sometimes it is so much easier to just drive through when we have a busy day. I know! It’s horrible and my children will probably turn out to be obese social misfits.
Every time I get food from a fast food restaurant, I wish there was a drive through somewhere in Utah County where I could drive up, order a whole wheat wrap loaded with sprouts, avocado, tomatoes and spinach, and a side of sliced apples or blueberries. Okay, Rhi would think that’s gross, so maybe whole wheat almond nut and fresh strawberry sandwich with some broccoli trees and baby carrots (Those don’t count as dreaded “veggies” for her) Oh, and a few bottles of odwalla.
Why doesn’t my dream come true?

Oh, and don’t forget a dollar menu. How is it that fresh food that is barely prepared costs more than ultra-processed junk?

Both of your comments have the same answer, Aubree: a corrupt government. Your dream doesn’t come true because the fresh, healthy food costs so much more. Why does it cost so much more if it takes far more energy to produce a hamburger than it does to produce a salad? It comes down to government subsidies. I updated my post with that information.

Fabulous Illustration, Mark… wow.

I would love a healthy fast food drive-up! I think there would be a problem with food storage. A restaurant like that would necessarily have to use all very fresh ingredients like fresh veggies and fruit. That could get very expensive (as per Mark’s illustration). Processed meats like hamburger patties and frozen french fries last a whole lot longer. Did you know that fast food french fries do not biodegrade? They have found perfectly whole MacDonalds french fries in landfills? Kinda creeps one out to think of putting something like that in one’s body….
